The patent, which TiVo filed for in 1998, has 56 claims with others relating to methods of processing various multimedia streams such as audio and video at low cost and storage format. The outcome of the suit for damages will likely determine whether TiVo launches legal action against other PVR suppliers, analysts said. EchoStar introduced its combo satellite receiver/PVR in 2001 using a proprietary operating system, but switched to Linux software a year later.
