According to a recent Textile Development Memo issued by the U.S. Association of Importers of Textiles and Apparel (USA-ITA), it is possible that the implementation of the Dominican Republic-Central American Free Trade Agreement (DR-CAFTA) will slip slightly from January 1, 2006 and not all of the participating countries will start at the same time, due to the need for the Central American and Dominican Republic governments to complete changes in their laws and regulations. 2. U.S. Set to Become Party to Inter-American Anti-Terrorism Pact
The Washington File reports that the U.S. will become a party to the Inter-American Convention Against Terrorism in 30 days, following the deposit of the instrument of ratification at Organization of American States (OAS) headquarters in Washington on November 15. According to the State Department, there are currently 34 signatories and 13 parties to the convention. 3. U.S. Disappointed with Canada's Preliminary Decision on U.S. Corn Imports
The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) has issued a press release stating that the U.S. is disappointed by Canada's finding that there is enough evidence to move forward with a full investigation of whether Canadian corn growers are being hurt by imports of unprocessed U.S. grain corn. The USTR contends that U.S. corn exports pose no threat to Canadian corn growers.
